The world is ancient, built upon and beneath the ruins of past empires, legends and artifacts living past them--as well as terrible menaces. Shrouded in a dark age between the collapse of the last great power and the rise of the next, it endures. Minor kingdoms prosper: baronies, holdings, city-states, but the power of kings goes only as far as their riders. Settlements are points of light in the widespread darkness, havens, islands of civilization in the wilderness that covers the world.

Magic is everywhere--people believe in and accept the power that magic provides. However, true masters are rare. Many people have access to a little, and it helps those living within the cities to maintain their communities. Surrounding the world, Edion, is the ether or ethereal plane which divides it from the other planes and the great Astral Sea.

So welcome. Why not weave a tale or two while you're here?

    The Plague Spreads
    by Parthenos posted 25 July 2009 @ 22:37

It is the fifth day of winter, 348 A.E.

Ursana, Thenaea, Salanica, and the Antanni Consulate have all closed their borders to attempt to control the Spellplague. This does not seem to have been effective, as cases continue to appear all over the country. Trade is grinding to a halt in Trathalik thanks to it. Magic users are strongly cautioned to stay in their home countries.

Hestavar has started to experience its own cases, right in the Titanshold area. Sages expect it to spread throughout the country and continue its northward march. In Minavas, there have been reports of areas known as 'spellscarred lands' where twisted magic seems to gather--people who enter contract the Spellplague. Citizens of Minavas and in other areas where the plague is prevalent should be extremely wary of these areas near their homes. Archmage Avis Quillnarr of Panilya has expressed the belief that these areas are ancient and should be left well alone.

Officially, Asysas has declared they are stopping all travel to and from their country, but this is only expected to reduce the number of refugees from the south. In related news, the followers of Asmodeus, Talona, and Bane appear to be fighting over the question of whose god released this as a punishment on the world--each sect seems to believe it was there god. The exarch of Ioun, again consulted in Panyila, said it didn't bloody well matter, since all of the sects were being affected by it. She then begged the College of Heraldry to leave her "the hell alone" lest she be forced to pitch them out of the highest tower.

It is the first day of winter (Yén Idhrin), Year 348 of our lady Erathis since the Founding. Earlier this year, Thenaea and Hestavar honored their cease-fire by the engagement of the Crown Prince to the Thenaean princess Adria T'Panara as well of the engagment of Hestavar's Princess Quenna to the noble paladin Sir Roland D'Asperi.

Shortly afterwards, the rampaging general of the White Banshee, Nyvaela was killed in Rilauven in single combat with the Embodiment of Lolth, Alyaere Despana. The youngest daughter of that House was restored to life by Kelemvor and his angel Lucius. Rilauven is still under reconstruction, as is most of the Vault of the Drow.

More recently, open civil war has again broken out in Virynor, and Prince Nicolai was taken out of the country again after a very brief time there. Minavas has been stricken by famine, and the Empire of Mallanor seems to be suffering the ravages of a newly emerged magical disease, the Spellplague. Spellcasters are particularly susceptible, and are cautioned not to travel through the country if they can avoid it. Thenaea's King has come to an agreement with the Jack of Tears to put an end to the trade blockade around Trathalik the pirate lord created. Salanica has ceased its war with Mallanor now that snow has hit the mountains, but announces there will be no cessation of hostilities due to the plague (which is no surprise to anyone). The Antanni Consulate again reaffirmed their neutral stance and renewed their non-aggression pacts with Salanica and the Empire of Mallanor, which also surprised no one. Rumors of a pact between the Empire and Hestavar are widely circulating, but have not been confirmed. However, Minavas, Ursana, Salanica, and Arcene are all making shows of force along their borders in case anyone gets any ideas. In Minavas, the Duchy of Lucesa announced its intentions to secede from the rest of the country. The Crown denied their request and civil war appears imminent.

In other news, astrologers in Xaniseos claim to have witnessed Ceylasas, the Harbinger in the skies over the city. The emergence of the comet suggests a coming calamity. The exarch of Ioun in Panilya refused to comment when hassled unmercifully by representatives from the Mainland's courts, saying she saw horrible deaths in their future if they did not remove themselves from her study immediately.

Adventurers and travelers are advised to be very cautious in their travels, as the growing strife will no doubt lead to more dangerous roads. As always, those on the roads are expected to look to their own defenses, as the authorities in the countries of Eboria will not be able to protect them.

    When You're Evil...

I'm thinking about putting up a reverse dungeon-ish adventure in the near future with an evil party. I'm curious to see who'd be interested and with what characters first, though. It may not happen, of course.

Okay, I have the first one for the entire main continent done. I just have to get it up on here. Everyone's going to have to tolerate the fact that it's done by hand. I tried to make it readable. I'm going to try to do Arcene, Hestavar, and Thenaea next--since they're the ones with adventures going.

More players would be nice, of course.

    Update Again

I've updated the group content, made it look nicer, linked to the stores, created a history section for the world history and set up The Runestone (a group chatroom)

For history, just write an item in group content, and that page can be linked to in the history by adding a subject and then using the html for linking, to link to the content page. (I can help with that when needed) "I' Sangan en' Quenta" means "The gather of history" when translated from Elvish.

Okay, now that things are working again we can actually put up news. Some questions first of all...do we want to create a group chat just in case we have need of it again (since last time we tried it wouldn't work)? Is there anyone who absolutely must have something done or do something about anything in the group?

There's discussion of getting more stuff up on the forum, which is always good. New members are always welcome to join, but I don't think there is a way I can encourage them any further than that. I'm hoping to get the language notes up soon, as well as some maps and histories. It could be a bit, of course.

    Atlas

Anyone with input for continents and places should send me a PM with their thoughts. We can at least work out where everything is (I hope). I think I have one (thus far referred to as the mainland) mapped, at least in my head. Sounds like Fallen Angel knows where things are too--I know there's references in chat to other places.

I promise I'll get in gear and try making the maps on Campaign Cartographer. The upcoming Christmas break ought to give me time, since I refuse to go outside in below zero weather. Anyone who'd like to help is more than welcome to pitch in.

Incidentally, anyone who understands how to set up an atlas on here and would do so for us is my hero.

First item of business: Fallen Angel has expressed concern over frightening people off. We have no interest in making this an exclusive group. As odd as we might be, we don't bite and anyone is welcome to join the group. Fantasy characters would make the most sense, of course.

Second item of business: Genteel Steel is actually up and running. It should allow anyone to register as a user on there to comment. You have to be authorized to be a writer for the site, merely so it doesn't become cluttered with spam.

That's pretty much it for right now. Thank you.
